Random Testing

March 5, 2018

Random vibration tests are standard in testing facilities because random waveforms reflect real-world vibration. A random waveform is inherently irregular, non-deterministic, and non-repetitive, so we cannot use a measured point in time to predict any point before or after. Therefore, we must analyze a random waveform with statistics until the vibration event occurs.

In this course, you will learn

  • How to calculate the power spectral density (PSD) to analyze a random waveform
  • The function of the fast Fourier transform (FFT) in PSD analysis
  • How to use filters, windowing, and averaging to adjust a digital sample and circumvent discontinuities
  • How to quantify random signals using statistics and probability distributions
  • Product design applications such as tolerances and fatigue analysis
